Lochgefängnisse – The hole prisons

For almost 500 years was one of the creepiest places welcoming its prisoners in to the cells to give them a nasty torture experience.

In the cellars of the Nuremberg City hall you can see quite staggering and authentic museum of Nuremberg hole prisons which were in service for almost 500 years and were truly cruel. Prisoners had to spend many days in one of about two meters by two meters large cells equipped with wooden planks, bunk and a pail. Better situated prisoners were able to pay for better treatment and food, however many prisoners were forced to spend theirs incarceration in a total dark without any kind of medical check-ups.

Some cells were equipped for special detecting methods. Cell nr. 11 was called ‘’Red rooster’’, referencing to burns prisoners were coming back with and cell nr. 12, which was equipped with a shredder machine, was called poetically ‘’Black cat’’.

The Lochgefängnisse is definitely a place to see while in Nuremberg. You can literally touch the tools that were actually used for torture. The tours are given only in german, but the place speaks for itself.
